Oil Pulling – What?

The most common question I get re Oil Pulling is “what’s that?”

It is the act of putting about half a teaspoon of oil – I only use coconut oil because of its very high list of healthful properties – in your mouth and swishing it around your mouth (like when you rinse after cleaning your teeth) for about 15-20 minutes, working the oil by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through the teeth.

“What?!!  Why?” – there they go again

The oil acts like a cleanser. When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris. It acts much like the oil you put in your car engine. The oil picks up dirt and grime. When you drain the oil, it pulls out the dirt and grime with it, leaving the engine relatively clean. Consequently, the engine runs smoother and lasts longer. Likewise, when we expel harmful substances from our bodies our health is improved and we run smoother and last longer

And because oil pulling can help asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, diabetes, migraine headaches, PMS, and chronic skin problems. Oil pulling works by detoxifying or cleansing the body, removing disease promoting toxins, thus allowing the body to heal itself. As a consequence, health problems of all types improve.

TIPS:

1) best on an empty stomach ie before a meal. Once a day but can do up to 3 times a day

2)  I do something as I am oil pulling eg I get dressed. do hair, make bed – all the general get-ready for the day stuff. This makes it much easier to oil pull for the 15 – 20 minutes required.

3) If you need to spit out before the time period is up, do so – then take a new amount of oil and continue

3) IMPORTANT when you spit out, spit into the garbage bin, not a sink or toilet. The coconut oil will harden in the cold water or against the cold pipes and eventually block your drains. NEVER swallow the oil because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.

But there is testimony after testimony to back up this crazy suggestion. And now my own – when I first wrote on oil pulling, I decided it was mostly for those with a condition, to remove problems already established. But I read more and realised I needed to do this daily, even though I was feeling and  looking healthy on all counts at the time.

After just a few days, I began to wake up with a blocked nose every morning. It persisted – even though I felt fine for the rest of the day.

After 4 weeks, I suddenly had a personal experience of the many testimonies I had read. I will care for you by not giving you the fine details but wanting to keep it nice, I experienced flu-like symptoms for about 10 days and could not believe the purging that came from many directions within.

As I knew what was happening, I stayed calm and went with it – in fact, after the initial surprise, I was rejoicing! Once the worst was over (about 4-5 days), I added a herbal multi-vitamin mixture to assist my body up and out the other side.

I have had sinus issues over the years but extremely minimal, in fact rare over the last 20 years or so. Now I have to admit to a clearness of breathing that I didn’t realise I wasn’t living before. I am still amazed – remember I looked healthy from every angle before daily oil pulling

Oil pulling traces it roots to oil gargling practiced in Ayurvedic medicine (but an Indian friend of mine denies this). Oil pulling as we know it today, was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. who claimed that oil pulling could cure a variety of illnesses ranging from heart disease and digestive troubles to hormonal disorders. He said it cured him of a chronic blood disorder of 15 years duration and within three days it cured his arthritis, which at times was so painful he was bed ridden. He used the method in his medical practice with great success. Frankly, I don’t care any more where it comes from – oil pulling has a very powerful cleansing and healing affect not only on the mouth and sinuses, but the entire body.

Testimonies I have read state that oil pulling has created results such as breathing easier, sleeping better resulting in more energy during the day, headaches gone, arthritic pain in the hands diminishing considerably after a week, relief of joint pain, eczema disappearing, skin becoming smoother and softer, periods returning to regular cycles with less cramping and less mood swings plus improvements in oral health such as whiter teeth, fresher breath with bleeding gums, tooth decay, and gum disease greatly diminishing or completely healing – and the list goes on… and on…

As good as it is, oil pulling isn’t always enough. Some people and some conditions require a little extra care. For this reason, naturopath Bruce Fife developed oil pulling into a more complete, more effective method that he terms Oil Pulling Therapy. This program incorporates medicated coconut oil (which you can make yourself), diet, select nutrients, oral pH balancing procedures, and, for those who have amalgam (mercury) fillings or metal crowns, a detox procedure designed specifically for removing heavy metals, all of which combine to greatly enhance the effects and healing properties of oil pulling. The details of this program are covered in Bruce’s book Oil Pulling Therapy: Detoxifying and Healing the Body Through Oral Cleansing. Find it here

Oil pulling is cheap; the only expense is for the oil you use. It is very easy; you simply swish oil in your mouth. And it is completely harmless. All you are doing is rinsing your mouth out with a food. You’re not even swallowing the oil. What can be more benign than that? Nearly anyone can do it, regardless of their level of health. If you have health issues, don’t let the simplicity of oil pulling deter you from trying it. Sometimes the simplest procedures produce the greatest results.

Hi there,I have been reading quite a bit on oil pulling therapy and doing it most mornings for maybe 6 weeks and I feel strange because everyone else seems to be getting some sort of results but me ,there can’t be any art to it as it is so simple but doesn’t seem to be for me

Kay, just relax with it. Yes, it took four weeks for me to have a reaction and now I continue to oil pull daily with no direct results. But I am aware that I am keeping the system clean. It is rare for everyone to have exactly the same results – there is always a variety of results and even extreme intensive testing would not uncover all the variables within us human beings. But you can rest assured that you are taking great preventative action to keep yourself healthy and free from all the polluting substances floating around in our atmosphere. It IS simple and you are doing everything right. Relax and let the results happen – which may still not be as you expect or something you can measure but there are only good results with coconut oil and oil pulling. Write again if you have further questions – cheers!

Hi I have been oil pulling for 3 weeks now with coconut oil and I felt immediate results with not feeling so sluggish and tired in the morning.. The first week gave me breakouts but my skin has settled down and feels more hydrated now. Also had a few headaches which i put down to detox. My teeth and mouth feels cleaner. Overall I feel a big improvement on health and a clearer head and mind. I will continue this for sure and I recommend to try…

It is my understanding that you need to force the oil through back and forth between your teeth rather than a mild swishing around the mouth. My interpretation of swish (and maybe some others’) is less active and forceful than pulling through the teeth. Hope this helps others get the benefits. Thanks for the article.
