The most common question I get re Oil Pulling is “what’s that?”
It is the act of putting about half a teaspoon of oil – I only use coconut oil because of its very high list of healthful properties – in your mouth and swishing it around your mouth (like when you rinse after cleaning your teeth) for about 15-20 minutes, working the oil by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through the teeth.
“What?!! Why?” – there they go again
The oil acts like a cleanser. When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris. It acts much like the oil you put in your car engine. The oil picks up dirt and grime. When you drain the oil, it pulls out the dirt and grime with it, leaving the engine relatively clean. Consequently, the engine runs smoother and lasts longer. Likewise, when we expel harmful substances from our bodies our health is improved and we run smoother and last longer
And because oil pulling can help asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, diabetes, migraine headaches, PMS, and chronic skin problems. Oil pulling works by detoxifying or cleansing the body, removing disease promoting toxins, thus allowing the body to heal itself. As a consequence, health problems of all types improve.
1) best on an empty stomach ie before a meal. Once a day but can do up to 3 times a day
2) I do something as I am oil pulling eg I get dressed. do hair, make bed – all the general get-ready for the day stuff. This makes it much easier to oil pull for the 15 – 20 minutes required.
3) If you need to spit out before the time period is up, do so – then take a new amount of oil and continue
3) IMPORTANT when you spit out, spit into the garbage bin, not a sink or toilet. The coconut oil will harden in the cold water or against the cold pipes and eventually block your drains. NEVER swallow the oil because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.
But there is testimony after testimony to back up this crazy suggestion. And now my own – when I first wrote on oil pulling, I decided it was mostly for those with a condition, to remove problems already established. But I read more and realised I needed to do this daily, even though I was feeling and looking healthy on all counts at the time.
After just a few days, I began to wake up with a blocked nose every morning. It persisted – even though I felt fine for the rest of the day.
After 4 weeks, I suddenly had a personal experience of the many testimonies I had read. I will care for you by not giving you the fine details but wanting to keep it nice, I experienced flu-like symptoms for about 10 days and could not believe the purging that came from many directions within.
As I knew what was happening, I stayed calm and went with it – in fact, after the initial surprise, I was rejoicing! Once the worst was over (about 4-5 days), I added a herbal multi-vitamin mixture to assist my body up and out the other side.
I have had sinus issues over the years but extremely minimal, in fact rare over the last 20 years or so. Now I have to admit to a clearness of breathing that I didn’t realise I wasn’t living before. I am still amazed – remember I looked healthy from every angle before daily oil pulling
Oil pulling traces it roots to oil gargling practiced in Ayurvedic medicine (but an Indian friend of mine denies this). Oil pulling as we know it today, was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. who claimed that oil pulling could cure a variety of illnesses ranging from heart disease and digestive troubles to hormonal disorders. He said it cured him of a chronic blood disorder of 15 years duration and within three days it cured his arthritis, which at times was so painful he was bed ridden. He used the method in his medical practice with great success. Frankly, I don’t care any more where it comes from – oil pulling has a very powerful cleansing and healing affect not only on the mouth and sinuses, but the entire body.
Testimonies I have read state that oil pulling has created results such as breathing easier, sleeping better resulting in more energy during the day, headaches gone, arthritic pain in the hands diminishing considerably after a week, relief of joint pain, eczema disappearing, skin becoming smoother and softer, periods returning to regular cycles with less cramping and less mood swings plus improvements in oral health such as whiter teeth, fresher breath with bleeding gums, tooth decay, and gum disease greatly diminishing or completely healing – and the list goes on… and on…
As good as it is, oil pulling isn’t always enough. Some people and some conditions require a little extra care. For this reason, naturopath Bruce Fife developed oil pulling into a more complete, more effective method that he terms Oil Pulling Therapy. This program incorporates medicated coconut oil (which you can make yourself), diet, select nutrients, oral pH balancing procedures, and, for those who have amalgam (mercury) fillings or metal crowns, a detox procedure designed specifically for removing heavy metals, all of which combine to greatly enhance the effects and healing properties of oil pulling. The details of this program are covered in Bruce’s book Oil Pulling Therapy: Detoxifying and Healing the Body Through Oral Cleansing. Find it here
Oil pulling is cheap; the only expense is for the oil you use. It is very easy; you simply swish oil in your mouth. And it is completely harmless. All you are doing is rinsing your mouth out with a food. You’re not even swallowing the oil. What can be more benign than that? Nearly anyone can do it, regardless of their level of health. If you have health issues, don’t let the simplicity of oil pulling deter you from trying it. Sometimes the simplest procedures produce the greatest results.

Have you heard of the book “The Maker’s Diet – The 40-day health experience that will change your life forever” by Jordan S Rubin? Let me share Jordan’s list of the top healing foods – I will list them all but only expand on the saturated fats (incl. coconut oil) section today:
Fish & fish oil – cold water fish or cod liver oil
Grains of the Bible – barley & wheat, particularly their young sprouts
Cultured dairy from goats, cows and sheep – high-quality, consumed straight from the animal or fermented
Olive oil – cold, never cooked
Small fruits – figs, grapes, berries
Soups and stocks
Honey – raw, unheated
Wild animal foods – properly raised, grass-fed, free range
Seeds – soaked and sprouted
Omega-3 eggs – “nature’s nearly perfect food. Eggs contain all known nutrients except for vitamin C!”
Raw cultured or fermented vegetables
AND Healthy Saturated Fats (high-vitamin butter, coconut oil)
Butter from grass-fed cows, extra virgin coconut oil and animal fats have nourished human brings for several thousands of years. However for the last five decades Americans have avoided these fats based on erroneous advice and, instead, increased their consumption of polyunsaturated and hydrogenated fats. As we have mentioned, in direct correlation, the rate of heart disease has increased, as has obesity and many immune system disorders. It is time to return to healthy fats from whole, grass-fed, cow butter; extra-virgin coconut oil; and properly raised animals.
Whole-milk butter produced from cows eating rapidly growing green grasses, is loaded with vitamins A, D and E. It is also high in Activator X, which significantly increases the effectiveness of vitamin A’s ability to stimulate a person’s immune system, as described by Dr Weston Price. It also contains a healthy balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, as well as CLA. (These characteristics are seriously compromised once a cow has any grain introduced to its diet.)
CLA is strictly a product of bacterial function and is virtually non-existent in cow-milk fat during any period when grain is in the diet. For many types of cancer, CLA 9-11 is proven to prevent and retard tumor cell growth.
The quality of Activator X and other vitamins is directly related to the quality of the grass / forage the cow is eating. The faster the grass is growing when the cow is grazing it, the higher the vitamin content. Make sure to buy butter from grass-fed cows….
Extra-virgin coconut oil is one of the healthiest saturated fats available (despite the misguided advice of so-called health experts warning against the saturated tropical oils such as coconut and palm oils). Coconut oil can tolerate extremely high heat, unlike polyunsaturated vegetable oils. Use extra-virgin coconut oil in cooking, baking, and in smoothies. It is a stable, healthy saturated fat that does not elevate undesirable (LDL) cholestrol; it reduces the symptoms of digestive orders, supports overall immune functions and helps prevent bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
Extra-virgin coconut oil is great for people suffering from candida yeast infections, due to the presence of caprylic acid and antifungal fatty acids contained in the oil. Extra-virgin coconut oil has also been shown to help balance the thyroid and improve metabolic function, which may result in weight loss.
